Location - Hound Point BP Forties Pipeline System Oil Terminal, Firth of Forth
Client - Hertel for BP
Information - Cracks associated with construction joints had developed over a period of time in the concrete walls and soffit of the deck oil sump. Some cracks had begun to seep oil and consulting engineers, IKM Consulting Ltd, instructed that repairs should be carried out by cutting back the concrete and cracks to uncontaminated material and sealing the crack chases with Thoiflex 600. After fixing heavy gauge stainless steel mesh across the cracks, Fosroc Renderoc HB40 was used to build up panels and a horizontal band around the sump.
The project proved the cost-effectiveness and flexibility of CANSpan lightweight aluminium platforms suspended from Hilti undercut anchors in the deck soffit. 5m spans were wrapped around the sump sides with a further 6m span below the soffit. The assembly avoided shipping and tidal problems and also enabled the client’s engineers, suitably harnessed, attached and supervised, to inspect the progress of the work.
